The brief
Working with Marais Construction, we were brought in to floor the holding and force-cooling rooms at Stellenpak Fruit Packers in Paarl. A fruit-packing facility is a hard environment for a floor: constant washdowns, cold rooms and rising moisture in the slab all work against any covering. The floor had to be hygienic, easy to clean and, above all, sealed off from the damp coming up through the concrete.
What we did
The whole job lived or died on the moisture barrier. We primed the raw slab and applied a Vaporstop epoxy moisture barrier, broadcasting a sand aggregate into the wet epoxy to key the surface so the next layer would grip. Over that sealed base we laid TAL Screedmaster self-levelling compound to bring the floor dead-flat, then installed 2.5 mm Floorworx vinyl tiles across the 70 m² of holding rooms for a tough, washable, food-industry-ready finish.
The result
A sealed, level, hard-wearing floor that stands up to a busy packhouse: moisture held back at the slab, a smooth tiled surface that washes down easily, and a base built to take years of cold-room and packing traffic.
