Your flooring questions, answered

Vinyl (LVT and SPC) is a plastic-based, fully waterproof plank; SPC has a rigid stone-composite core, LVT is a little softer and warmer. Laminate has a wood-based core with a printed top and is only water-resistant. Engineered wood is real timber. See LVT vs SPC and laminate vs vinyl for the detail.

Vinyl floors, LVT and SPC, are fully waterproof, ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. Laminate is only water-resistant, and engineered wood should be kept dry, so vinyl is the safest choice for wet areas.

For scratch resistance, laminate and SPC are excellent. For a softer, quieter, fully waterproof floor that shrugs off accidents, LVT is a favourite. We can recommend the right balance per room.

The wear layer is the clear protective top on vinyl, measured in mm (e.g. 0.55 mm). Thicker means more durable. Homes are fine with 0.3 to 0.55 mm; heavy or commercial traffic wants 0.55 mm or more. Full explainer in understanding wear layers.

Both. We supply on its own if you have an installer, and we supply and install as one accountable job, which is what most customers choose. We are also happy to fit product you have already bought.

It depends on the area and how much preparation is needed. A single room can be a day; larger homes and commercial sites run over several days, and we can work in phases to limit disruption. Floor prep like screeds and moisture barriers need curing time we build into the plan.

Yes. We regularly install client-supplied product, and we will still prepare the subfloor properly so it lasts. See our Mowbray attic project for an example.

A floor is only as good as the base under it. Uneven or damp subfloors cause lifting, hollow spots and early failure. Getting the prep right is the difference between a floor that lasts and one that does not. More in why floor prep makes or breaks the job.

You need one when the slab carries or may carry damp: ground-floor concrete with no intact DPM, new screeds that are not fully dry, and coastal or humid sites. We test the slab to be sure. Read moisture barriers explained.

Self-levelling screed is a compound that flows out to a dead-flat surface over an uneven slab. It is essential under thin LVT and vinyl, which telegraph every bump beneath them.

Yes. We lift and dispose of old carpet, tiles, laminate and vinyl, and prepare the subfloor ready for the new floor.

It depends on the product, the area in m², and how much prep the subfloor needs. The accurate way is a free on-site measure. You can estimate materials yourself with our m² calculator, then request a quote.

Measure the length and width of each area and multiply for m², then add a waste allowance (usually about 10%). Our calculator does this for you and rounds up to full boxes, since flooring is sold by the box.

Mats at the doors, felt pads under furniture, sweep or vacuum regularly and damp mop with the right cleaner. Never use a steam mop on wood or laminate. Full guidance in flooring maintenance that works.

Engineered and solid wood can be buffed and re-coated, or sanded and re-sealed, to look new again. Worn vinyl and commercial sheet floors can be professionally scrubbed and re-sealed. Both are far cheaper than replacing.
